Aetna offers a number of different dental plans, so it is important that you learn about the details of your unique policy to find out how it works. In the meantime, here is a general overview of the PPO coverage that is common among Aetna plans:

  • Preventive care, including cleanings, checkups, and routine bitewing X-rays, is usually 100% covered.
  • Minor services, such as fillings, simple extractions, and emergency pain relief, may be 50% covered or 80% covered (depending on which plan you choose).
  • Major services, encompassing such things as root canal therapy, crowns, dentures, and bridges, may be up to 50% covered. (Some Aetna plans do not provide coverage for major services.)

Your policy may also have a deductible, a waiting period before you can use your benefits for certain services, and an annual maximum that places a limit on how much Aetna will pay for approved services within a calendar year.

Because our practice is in-network with Aetna, we are in an ideal position to help you maximize your benefits. Out-of-pocket expenses are usually lowest at in-network practices. Plus, we may be able to strategically schedule major treatments across calendar years so you can use two annual maximums instead of just one.
